Life of a Widow in Pakistan

We often come across stories in which widows living in Pakistan are treated in the weirdest of ways. Even years after their husband passing away, they aren’t allowed to dress up nicely, go to gatherings or talk to people in a friendly way.

[bs-quote quote=”Is that really fair? Absolutely not. Sometimes culture forces us to act in ways that are totally incorrect. Why would you do that to anyone?” style=”style-13″ align=”center” color=”#dd0000″ author_name=”Sarah Ahmad Uqaili ” author_job=”Contributor, Baaghi TV “][/bs-quote]

It is already difficult enough to have lost your spouse. Not difficult in ways that the society makes us think. The right to enjoy and have fun doesn’t end when someone’s husband passes away. But it’s difficult from an entirely different perspective.

I’ll share a story that someone once told to me. There was a poor couple, so poor that they couldn’t afford to put up a door in their house. They had put up a curtain in place of the door instead. The wife always told the husband that she feels scared, especially at night. What if someone would come while they were asleep? Not that they had any possessions but they were a family, had small kids, had privacy. Finally the husband was able to afford to get a door up and the wife felt elated. Unfortunately, soon after this incident, the husband passed away. When the wife was asked, she expressed her sorrow and said she never felt so scared at night even when there was no door the way she feels scared now in the absence of her husband.

[bs-quote quote=”It is difficult emotionally, even if not financially for a few. There is no doubt about the fact that husbands are a source of security for wives. We just need to break the taboo.” style=”style-13″ align=”center” color=”#dd0000″ author_name=”Sarah Ahmad Uqaili ” author_job=”Contributor, Baaghi TV”][/bs-quote]

So yes, it is difficult to be a widow. It is difficult emotionally, even if not financially for a few. There is no doubt about the fact that husbands are a source of security for wives. We just need to break the taboo, let them breathe, be supportive towards them and be considerate.

What role do wives play for husbands? That’s a topic for another day.
