Life Tips by Mehreen: How to Keep Yourself Happy?

The concept of happiness for me is being with my family and seeing my children happy but, isn’t that what most of us think and wish to achieve?

Each one of us aims to attain happiness in life, one way or the other. Whatever we do, whatever we think, our goal is to be happy and lead a cheerful contented life. Either being with your loved ones is your aim or a dream house or getting your desired career, these all lead to feelings of blissfulness.

In other words, happiness comes when you feel satisfied and fulfilled. It is a feeling of contentment, that life is just as it should be. Perfect happiness, enlightenment, comes when you have all of your needs satisfied.

Happiness cannot be found, it has to be created, it has to be built up in your mind. It is actually a state of mind. If your mind is at peace then you have gained happiness. If you have everything that the world can give – pleasure, possessions and power but lack peace of mind, how can you be happy? You cannot run after happiness and pleasure, it comes from within – created in your mind and felt by your heart.

Whenever I have tried to go somewhere in pursuit of happiness, I have often failed. Once I felt depressed and low, I went for a shopping spree in pursuit of getting out of my depressed state. Though I got what I needed and it made me feel a bit elated, it did not however, bring me permanent happiness.The reason being, those material things provided pleasure for a while but long lasting happiness comes when such things are shared among loved ones. So the feeling of being happy cannot be acquired by running after your desires, happiness can come if you feel satisfied and content with them.

The question that arises here is how to achieve this contention and satisfaction?

First of all, I believe that you should be satisfied with your own self, inner happiness comes when you accept yourself as you are, give yourself some credit and don’t find flaws in your personality. God has created you, you shouldn’t be ungrateful to Him. When you feel happy with yourself then naturally you feel fulfilled.

I would suggest that if you are not happy with any of your habits or you need to improve in some area, then you can always achieve your goal by learning that skill. For instance, if you feel that your speech needs improvement then why not go for its betterment, learn from some proper place or work to increase your vocabulary. Believe me, this learning process itself will you give immense satisfaction and you will feel triumphant.

If you want to learn something new, just go for it, don’t wait or hesitate. Whatever age, place or situation you are in, you can always try to learn something new or work towards acquiring a certain skill. This learning process will in turn leave you feeling exhilarated and will remove some of your handicaps regarding your own self thus, making you feel good and happy.

Another aspect that brings happiness in life is love and companionship. Love, in any form, brings happiness to our lives. Healthy relationships with friends, family, and our significant other can all improve the quality of our life and bring joy to it. Being near your loved ones gives one immense pleasure and happiness.

To me its the most important factor of my life’s fulfillment and delight. So, try to be as loving and caring to your near and dear ones because time and people never come back, whatever you are given, be thankful for that.

Sometimes just standing outside your door can make you happy. It’s the small moments that keep us alive and cheerful. You have to create happiness in small gestures for instance you can go for a walk, it opens up your mind, letting fresh air and fresh thoughts seep in. I have always felt myself elated whenever I go for a stroll, my worries and tensions feel like they’re vanishing away with each step I take. It’s like when you let yourself merge with nature and the surroundings, it keeps your heart and mind at peace and bliss.

Wouldn’t you feel happy if you get a chance to simply drink coffee at your favorite cafe, or a get together with your friends? There could be so many small instances which could give you joy.

REMEMBER: Even visiting a relative can help you feel jovial by reminiscing about your childhood and its mischievousness.

I have often seen people having all the luxuries, comforts and riches of life, but devoid of happiness. Having a bigger house but without any loved one to share it with, can’t guarantee your happiness and can’t turn it into a loving home. To convert your house into a home you have to have contention and happiness in you and spread the same around you.

We often hear or read stories about celebrities and famous people, living their life to the fullest. But this is only a mirage which seems visible to the masses, what their actual sufferings are, is something which is hidden from the public.

We have so many examples here, a prominent one being that of Michael Jackson’s sad story. He was a sad and lonely man despite all of his outward success. He was a genius ahead of his time, an icon and was dubbed as the “King of the Pop” with hits like “Black or White”, “Billy Jean” and “Thriller”. He lived the most luxurious life one could ever dream of, had all the facilities of life at Neverland [his mansion].

He never wanted to turn old so he used to live in a special chamber to increase his life span. How could his life be happy when he had all sorts of health insecurities? He was a health fanatic and was always on medicines, as reported. He wasn’t satisfied with his skin color and features so he got them changed too. How could he have been a happy person when he wasn’t happy with what God had blessed him with? How could he be happy when he had no one close to him, to enjoy the luxuries of an amusement park, a pool house and many guest rooms in his mansion?

Eventually, he died at the age of 50 due to an over dosage of a drug administered on his request by his personal physician. In my eyes, a man of such heightened success and luxuries died as a sad, unhappy person who couldn’t enjoy his health, his comforts and ultimately his success became deteriorated.

We have lots of examples around us where many famous people are suffering from unhappy emotions despite having a sumptuous and grand life. Take for instance, a American singer-songwriter Lady Gaga.

She is mostly known for her cool musical hits and her strong campaigns that encourage people to love their talents. Recently, when she was talking about the things that has made her life happy, A Star is Born lead shocked most of us as money did not make it to the top in her list.

For Lady Gaga, happiness is loving yourself, exploring your full potential and using your talents to serve others. There is happiness and contentment in you when you use your talents to make other people find joy and meaning in their life. (Source: Blogool)

Then we have an example of another young pop star Justin Bieber, despite his fortune and fame, the “Yummy” singer is an unhappy man. He is rarely seen smiling in his pictures due to his anti social behaviour. He does not have a good relationship with his fans due to his lack of respect for them. This shows that without positive social relation with the people around you, no matter how much money you have in your bank account, you will never be happy.

True happiness also comes when people around you respect and adore you because of your good reputation in society.

And so, the list goes on, then there are some notable people who suffered depression despite being on top of the world. Winston Churchill, who was the Prime minister of Great Britain and defeated Hitler in WWII, had severe depression. Then we have Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States who suffered from debilitating bouts of depression. These big names had so much power in their hands, yet were not happy and satisfied with themselves and their lives.

Reason being that they were not basically happy from the inside, they couldn’t afford to enjoy the small moments of life. They had it all and yet they had nothing more to pursue in life. There was nothing in life left for them to achieve.

However, happiness also comes in the form of achieving something, quest of finding something is a journey that leads one to contention.

These big names are always seen making charities and donations, this is because they want to acquire the peace of mind that they had lost during the journey of their success and fame, and there is no other better way to obtain it but by helping needy people.

In my suggestion, one of the best way to stay happy is to spread happiness around you. This is done by helping needy people, by giving out charities and by being a helping hand around. Thinking about and caring for other people besides yourself also gives a sense of deep satisfaction. You should be compassionate about your goals and your loved ones. Caring about them is reciprocated by being cared and loved for.

The more I spread happy feelings in my kids, the more I feel elated myself thus acquiring inner peace for myself.

Giving out money, basic necessities and your time to some charitable institutes is also a positive way to bring out happiness in you. Whenever I have tried helping a needy child on the streets by whatever little I could offer him, it has no doubt ended up in giving me peace of mind and a purpose to my lost soul. My monthly trips to SOS Village make me look forward to supporting the child for whom I am only but an invisible helping hand and that feeling alone, gives me immense pleasure.

Another factor that can provide us with happiness is our connection with God. The weaker this bond gets, the less happier we tend to be in life. Our religious beliefs should be strong enough to keep us happy and satisfied.

I have always felt satiated, happier and stronger when I reach out to God whenever I can. My prayers, my communication and my supplication to God is enough for my peace of mind and happiness.

Never let go of your commitment to the One and Only who brought you into this world, you are foremost His and your obligation is towards Him first. So fulfill your pledge to God, serve Him and humanity and be kind to all and yourself too and see how happy and pleased you can be in your life.

REMEMBER: There would be many moments when you will feel down and upset but get up, pull yourself and be thankful for your life.
