An NGO, in its report, revealed that the literacy rate in Pakistan is alarmingly low, with a large number of children not being able to attend school.
According to details, the Pak Alliance for Math and Science report says that more than 20 million children between the ages of 5 and 16 lack access to education, and Pakistan ranks second in the list of countries where children are not attending schools.
The report further says that the rate of children who do not attend school has reached 32%. The highest proportion is 47% in Balochistan, with 44% in Sindh, 32% in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 24% in Punjab, and 10% in Islamabad.
The report also goes on to say that 77 lakh children in Punjab, 64.82 lakh in Sindh, 3.8 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2 million in Balochistan, and 52,000 children in Islamabad do not go to school. 54% of school-going children are girls and 46% are boys, 77% are from rural areas and 23% are from urban areas.
The document cited expensive education as one of the major reasons for not going to school. 87% of citizens are of the opinion that education is very expensive, while 13% cited other reasons.
