Man opens plane door mid-air, tells police he was ‘uncomfortable’

SEOUL: A man in his thirties was reportedly detained by authorities after he opened the plane door mid-air. The passenger onboard an Asiana Airlines flight informed police he had been “uncomfortable”.
According to a Yonhap News Agency report, on Friday, a passenger told police he opened the plane door minutes before it landed in Daegu, South Korea because he had felt “uncomfortable”.

The man who was reported to be in his thirties, further informed the police that he did so because he wanted to “get off the plane quickly”. The Yonhap report further added that the man had been stressed after recently losing his job.
According to Reuters, the plane was approximately 700 feet above the ground when it happened, causing panic onboard. Additionally, nine passengers had to be taken to the hospital for breathing problems, however, they were dismissed after two hours, claimed an official of the fire department.
On the other hand, there are reports the local police hope to arrest the detained man once the investigation is complete.

Addressing the incident, a former Korean Air Cabin safety official said that the case was “unprecedented”. Jin Seong-hyun added, that there are incidents where passengers have opened emergency exists without authorization while the plane was on the ground.
Likewise, a transport ministry official has said that it is possible to open emergency exits near ground level or on the ground because the pressure inside and outside the cabin is similar, reported Al Arabiya.
