Marvel movies are all “cut and paste”: Denis Villeneuve
Almost two years have passed since Martin Scorsese said that superhero movies weren’t cinema. Now, Dune director Denis Villeneuve has also stated basically the same thing.
While speaking to El Mundo, the French-Canadian director expressed his thoughts on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, stating that all of them abided by the same cookie-cutter formula – which might not be entirely wrong.
He stated to El Mundo, “There are too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a cut and paste of others.”
Further in Premier, he elaborated, “The problem today… well, if we’re talking about Marvel, the thing is, all these films are made from the same mold. Some filmmakers can add a little color to it, but they’re all cast in the same factory. It doesn’t take anything away from the movies, but they are formatted. ”
However, one has to note that pretty much all MCU movies have been blockbusters, most recently Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and have raked in billions. Most, if not all, have received rave reviews from both the critics as well as the viewers so while from an objective perspective, Villeneuve might not be wrong, but they are undoubtedly fun.
Dune, the biggest film of the director’s career so far is scheduled to release on October 22, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya – who herself is also part of the MCU, having acted in the Spider-man movies alongside Tom Holland.
