London, April 21 2021: In a bid to become more visible to the public, the Security Service or MI5 as it is better known, will set up an official social media account on Instagram, the platform owned by Facebook, which is used by 1 billion people globally.
These changes come as MI5’s new director general, Ken McCallum aims to make the highly secretive agency “open up and reach out in new ways” by making it come out of the shadows of myths and legends. The Security Service will adopt the handle @mi5official and this will be an opportunity for the people working there to interact with the public, reveal archives, host Q&As with serving officers and bust popular myths about the spy network.
These social media accounts will also help the agency to promote career opportunities and improve diversity in their employee profiles, which according to a parliamentary report in 2018 was failing to reflect modern Britain. Historical exhibits belonging to the agency will also be shared on Instagram for public viewing.
According to popular culture legends, the agency was once famous for hiring potential new recruits in shadowy corners but had recently started advertising openings publicly.According to McCallum, a lot of what the agency does must remain invisible but there is no reason for their existence to be shadowy and untouchable. Interacting with the public will be a step towards a progressive future. McCallum himself has a shining record of 25 years of service in the agency and he was responsible for overseeing all counter terrorism operations during the 2012 London Olympics.
Other members of the UK’s spy network are the GCHQ responsible for cybersecurity and which is already on Instagram and the Secret Intelligence Service or MI6 as it is better known, the backdrop of the world’s most famous fictional spy character, 007 or James Bond.
