June 25, 2021: After Microsoft executives showed the biggest changes expected in windows 11, CEO Satya Nadella took the stage and tried to explain how the new operating system enables Microsoft to be different from another company with a popular operating system: Apple.

“Today the world needs a more open platform, one that allows apps to become platforms in their own right,” he said.

The comments come as Apple faces legal pressure and complaints from companies to control it in a way that allows developers to make money through the App Store. Among other things, Apple prevents app developers from offering anything that looks like a competitive store. Like an app that includes links to download more than one app. Last year, Apple blocked Microsoft from providing a single app that would allow people to access cloud-based video games on iOS. Microsoft already offers a similar app for Google’s Android mobile platform.

Apple has also taken a 30% cut on all follow-on sales from any app purchase – such as subscriptions or in-game purchases – which users download through their App Store. (It recently cut its deductions by 15% for small developers with less than develop 1 million in development.) With Windows 11, Microsoft is “introducing new store commerce models and policies and creating new opportunities for local publishers,” Nadella said.

The company is giving third-party developers the option to use Microsoft’s Microsoft Commerce platform in their apps and not share any of its revenue with Microsoft. End users can download apps and games from companies like Apex Games and Valve Software, through non-Microsoft App Stores. “Windows recognizes that there is no personal computing without a private agency.” “Personal computing requires choice. And we need to nurture and develop our own agency on computing. We want to overcome many of the barriers today and provide choice and connectivity.”

The company is adding its Teams chat and video calling app to Windows 11, and the app works on iOS, Android, Mac, Web and Linux. Historically, Apple has been more selective about the availability of its messaging and FaceTime apps, although iPhone makers have said that FaceTime will be coming to Android and Windows earlier this month in the fall. In the past, Apple has received pushbacks to promote its applications on its operating system.

But now, since Microsoft makes it possible for anyone to download Android apps in Windows 11, the company is giving people a wider choice.
