The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced that more monsoon rains, accompanied by wind and thundershowers, are predicted across the country starting today, July 29, 2025. This fresh spell of intensified monsoon activity is expected to bring widespread precipitation and raises concerns about potential flash floods and urban flooding.
According to the Met Office, weak monsoon currents have been continuously penetrating the upper and central parts of the country and are now expected to intensify significantly from today. Furthermore, a westerly wave is likely to approach the upper parts of the country, which will further strengthen the weather system and extend the duration and coverage of rainfall.
The PMD has issued an impact-based advisory, warning that heavy rains may trigger flash floods in local nullahs and streams across the country. Areas particularly vulnerable to flash flooding include the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, parts of northeastern Balochistan, northeast Punjab, and Kashmir.
Urban flooding is also a significant concern for low-lying areas in major cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Sialkot, particularly from tonight (July 29) to July 31. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also issued warnings, urging all relevant federal and provincial departments, as well as local administrations, to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures.
Authorities have advised the general public, travelers, and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution, especially in vulnerable areas. Landslides and mudslides may also occur in the hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, and Galiyat, potentially leading to road closures. The public is encouraged to stay updated on weather conditions through official channels and safety advisories.
