Moral & Practical Responsibilities
The concept of ‘morality’ refers to a structured approach to determining what constitutes appropriate behavior within human society. Broadly speaking, it defines a set of core human values, explains how these values can be realized, and provides justifications for the established value systems and practices.
Moral responsibility pertains to the notion that individuals are accountable for their actions and should adhere to a moral framework. It involves assessing a person’s answerability, accountability, and the extent to which actions can be attributed to them.

Notably, Kant distinguishes between what he terms perfect and imperfect duties. Perfect duties are specific obligations that must be fulfilled without exception, unless there is a conflict with other moral obligations. These duties serve as moral imperatives. In contrast, imperfect duties, whether toward oneself or others, involve general principles that require consideration of contextual factors, including social influences, in decision-making.
When we speak of practical responsibilities, we refer to responsibilities in real-world application, rather than in theory. This involves identifying an individual who is directly responsible for an action or inaction and the consequences that follow.

Can moral responsibilities and practical responsibilities can come in conflict with each other? Absolutely. Kant states[Metaphysics of Morals Ak 6:224]:
“A conflict of duties would be a relation between them in which one of them would cancel the other (wholly or in part). But since duty and obligation are concepts that express the objective practical necessity of certain actions and two rules opposed to each other cannot be necessary at the same time, if it is a duty to act in accordance with one rule, to act in accordance with the opposite rule is not a duty, but even contrary to duty; so a collision of duties and obligations is inconceivable.”

Many times, all of us are pulled in two different directions. Though we know, without question what is the moral duty-we may often side with the practical obligation because its practical. Though, many a time that nagging feeling of failing in our moral duty can keep us awake at nights because we know, without exception, a conscious choice was made.
Sacrificing a practical choice at the alter of the moral responsibility may be deemed “impractical, foolish or emotional.” But is it?
