Morocco: Rescue operation to save boy trapped in well ends in heartbreak

Feb 6, 2022:  A Moroccan boy who had been trapped in a well since Tuesday has died, according to Morocco’s state news agency, Maghreb Arab Press.

Rescue efforts to rescue a five-year-old Moroccan boy who fell into a dry well on Tuesday had captured the attention of the entire world, with rescue crews working for five days straight to reach him.

Saturday brought good news when it was announced that Rayan Oram had finally been freed on Saturday evening, but the jubilation soon gave way to sorrow when his death was confirmed by local authorities at about 10pm local time (21:00 GMT).

The 5-year-old boy, previously identified only as Rayan, was retrieved by rescue teams from the well on Saturday but did not survive his ordeal, state media reported. King Mohammed VI of Morocco offered condolences to Rayan’s family in a phone call, according to a statement from the Royal Palace.
The little boy was trapped in a 100-foot (30-meter) underground well in Chefchaoeun Province. Rayan fell into a well on Tuesday afternoon and was found crying, his mother said in an interview with state-run Al-Awla TV two days later. She said he was playing nearby before he went missing, and she called the authorities immediately after finding out what had happened.

Rescuers were able to feed Rayan and provide him with oxygen through an opening in the well and introduce a camera to monitor his progress. Meanwhile, a medical helicopter and medical staff specializing in resuscitation had also been deployed to the area to take care of Rayan once he was pulled from the well.
