In June 2023, the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad disclosed details of a covert operation carried out within Iran. According to Mossad, its operatives had recently interrogated a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) who had been plotting to assassinate Israeli citizens in Cyprus.
Israel had already expressed gratitude to Cyprus for its role in thwarting this plot. As further evidence, Mossad released video footage of a confession by Yusef Shahbazi Abbasalilu, along with a boarding pass indicating his travel from Istanbul to Iran. If true, this suggests that Mossad operates in Iran with remarkable ease, not only gathering intelligence but also arresting and interrogating regime operatives on Iranian soil.

This revelation is shocking, but is it truly surprising?
As improbable as it may seem, this is not the first time Mossad has claimed to have conducted such an operation. In fact, this marks the third instance in the past eighteen months. Ismail Haniyeh in 2024 was the fourth, though Israel has yet to officially take credit for that operation.

The ease with which Mossad operates within Iranian territory is remarkable. The agency has deeply infiltrated multiple levels of Iranian security, enabling precise intelligence gathering and targeted strikes. One notable example is the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, Iran’s leading nuclear scientist, in November 2020. He was killed using an AI-assisted remote-controlled machine gun. Iran’s intelligence minister, Mahmoud Alavi, stated that he had warned security forces two months prior about an assassination plot targeting Fakhrizadeh at the exact location where he was ultimately killed. This suggests that the perpetrator might have been a high-ranking member of the IRGC, capable of disregarding the warning and executing the plan at the predetermined time and place. According to a BBC report, the Iranian government refrains from disclosing the names and ranks of such individuals to protect the reputation of the Revolutionary Guards (February 5, 2022).
