13th August: Last week a huge ship MV Wakashio hit the coral reef and leaked 1000 tonnes of oil from the 4000 tonnes it was carrying.
According to reports, Mauritius reached out to France for help. The UN and the International Marine Services provided technical advice to the island national regarding the matter.
Pravind Jugnauth, the prime minister of Mauritius, said on Wednesday that the 3000 tonnes of oil that were left on the ship has been brought back without causing any more harm to the marine life by leaking any more of it.

The spill has damaged tourism that was already stricken very badly due to the pandemic. Mauritius relies heavily upon its tourism industry, the two catastrophes combined have threatened the most thriving sector of their economy.
Their tourism industry generates 1.3 billion USD for the economy last year.

“It is going to affect the communities down there, especially for the fishermen, the local guys that live there, that’s how they make money for tourists,” said Willow, the owner of a kite surfing business.
Tourists go snorkeling, diving, wakeboarding, and to see the dolphins, all of these activities are what drive tourists to Mauritius along with the spectacular views if the oil leakage isn’t handled quickly, Mauritius will suffer a great loss.
