New Delhi: “Muslim women for sale” app has been launched in India. It has been reported that to promote Hindutva ideology in India and harass Muslims, especially women is being modelized through misuse of social media platforms.

Trolling a woman on social media is the easiest thing for many people to do and this trolling is mostly based on personal attacks. But in India, all the boundaries of the low-key cases of harassment of Muslim women have been crossed.

According to South Asian Wire, an open source app has been created on social media with pictures of various Muslim women called “Sally for Sale”.

Sally is an insulting term used for Muslim women. It featured photos of more than 80 women, their names and Twitter handles.

At the top of the app was written “Find Your Sally Deal”. A Muslim woman’s picture, name and Twitter handle details were being shared with users when they clicked on it.

The South Asian Wire Editor Guilds of India has condemned the attack on Muslim women and women journalists, saying the use of social media and digital platforms to intimidate women journalists is worrisome.

This open source app was developed on GitHub, an internet hosting company. However, on Monday evening, it was removed. If Muslim women speak, they are threatened with rape, personal information is sold.

The app was launched on June 14. Most activity took place between July 4 and 5.

The ‘Sally for Sale’ app is no longer available on Git Hub. Nor is it known who designed it. Some of the Muslim women whose information was shared on the app are from the Indian capital, Delhi, and some from other cities.

The Delhi Commission for Women has sent a notice to the Delhi Police asking them to register an FIR. From Git Hub, the police have traced the IP address, location as well as the email ID and phone number used to create the app. In addition, Twitter has been asked to delete some objectionable tweets and the data of those who run this handle.

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has asked the Delhi Police what action they have taken. DCW chief Swati Maliwal asked the Deputy Commissioner of Police to provide a copy of the FIR registered in the case and identify the accused. And asked for details of his arrest. According to South Asian Wire, Maliwal has given police a week to provide details.

Speaking to South Asian Wire about the incident, DCW said, “The Delhi Commission for Women has issued a self-imposed notice on media reports for uploading pictures of many Muslim girls on internet platforms without their consent.
