Myanmar state authorities confirm that they will release more than 5,000 prisoners who had been  jailed for protesting against February’s coup.

A large number of people were arrested during the bloody demonstrations after the military leaders seized power. Myanmar’s leader, General Min Aung Hlaing said that as many as 5,636 prisoners will be freed for humanitarian reasons.

This came as the the general had been excluded from an annual summit of regional leaders, who had stated that the military had not done enough to end the raging turmoil.

The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) agreed to invite a non-political representative from Myanmar instead of Gen Min Aung Hlaing, as they thought of his deeds as non -humanitarian and oppressive.

As many as 1,178 people were murdered and 7,355 were arrested, charged or sentenced during the crackdown on dissent that had resulted in Aung Sun Suu Kyi being removed from power, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.

The general said the prisoners would be released on the day of the Buddhist holiday Thadingyut later in October. While adressing he general public through television broadcast, the junta chief insisted that the military was forever committed to peace and democracy. He said his government had its own five-stage plan to restore democracy.

The authorities have previously released more than 2,000 anti-coup protesters in July.
