Dec 6, 2021: According to media reports, a court in Myanmar has sentenced ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison.
A government spokesman told AFP on Monday that Aung San Suu Kyi had been sentenced to two years in prison for “inciting violence” and two years in prison for violating COVID-19 rules.
Zaw Min Tun said former President Win Myint was also jailed for four years on the same charges.
He said the pair would not be taken to jail yet.
Without elaborating, he added, “They will face other charges from where they are now.”
Reuters and the Associated Press quoted sources familiar with the case as saying that Aung San Suu Kyi and One Mint had been sentenced to four years in prison. Monday’s ruling is the first of a dozen cases against Aung San Suu Kyi by the Myanmar military.
After the Generals took control of the country in February earlier this year, there have been other lawsuits against the Nobel Peace Prize winner including numerous charges of corruption, breach of state secrecy law, and the Telecom Act, which altogether carry a total sentence of more than a century in prison. Detainee Aung San Suu Kyi denies all charges.
Supporters of the 76-year-old leader say the cases are baseless and designed to end her political career and tie her up in legal proceedings while the military consolidates power.
Charles Santiago, a Malaysian lawmaker and head of the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), condemned the sentence, calling it a “travesty of justice.”
Santiago urged the ASEAN to “hold the line against this illegal takeover”, adding, “Since the day of the coup, it’s been clear that the charges against Aung San Suu Kyi, and the dozens of other detained MPs, have been nothing more than an excuse by the junta to justify their illegal power grab.”
The 10-member regional bloc is leading diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis in Myanmar, and Santiago said Monday’s ruling “reflects a continuing insult to the people for ASEAN” and its peace plan, which includes Myanmar. This includes starting a dialogue between the opposing parties.
