Lahore, 30th June: The National Assembly of Pakistan’s website has been made accessible to the visually impaired, said Asad Qaiser.

Asad Qaiser, Speaker National Assembly, while presenting a copy of the Constitution of Pakistan on Braille system in the National Assembly sitting on Wednesday, said that today is a historic day for this House.

He said that on his instructions, the Secretariat of the National Assembly had made the Constitution of Pakistan fully Braille and made it accessible to the visually impaired after which they can read it easily.

He said that this historic achievement was an expression of commitment to ensure meaningful participation of the eligible people in the affairs of the country.

He further said that with this success, Pakistan has become the first in the region and one of the few countries in the world where the Constitution is available in Braille.

He informed that the website of the National Assembly has been made accessible to the blind through special software. He said that a disability audit has been carried out to make the Parliament building accessible exclusively to eligible persons and in the light of the report, washrooms and other facilities have been provided for special persons on each floor.

He said that with these measures, the parliament building is the first building that is fully accessible to special people.

Referring to the performance of the National Assembly in the field of parliamentary diplomacy, the Speaker said that the National Assembly Secretariat has also made significant achievements in the field of parliamentary diplomacy.

Asad Qaiser said that a meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) was held in Islamabad earlier this month under the auspices of the National Assembly Secretariat.

The meeting took place after a long period of nine years and was attended by speakers from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan and Turkey, along with parliamentary delegations, while speakers and parliamentary delegations from Iran, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan attended the conference via video link.

The conference reactivated the organization nine years later and the conference approved the establishment of a permanent secretariat in Islamabad and elected the Speaker of the National Assembly as its President for the year 2022-2021.

In addition, the Kashmir issue was included in Paiko’s Islamabad Declaration and all countries supported it, which is a historic achievement. He congratulated the members of the House on the approval of the Paico Conference Declaration.

Speaking on the historical background of the formation of the National Assembly, the Speaker said that this elected body was established on August 10, 1947, and this year marks the 74th anniversary of its establishment and the House will enter its Platinum Jubilee.
