NEPRA seeks public opinion on K-Electric’s distribution license
Baaghi TV: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has sought the opinion of the public within three days to change the electricity distribution license of K Electric.
In this regard, a statement issued by NEPRA said that K Electric has failed to upgrade its distribution system and consumers are facing problems of prolonged load shedding and over-billing.
The statement said that K Electric did not expand or upgrade the distribution system. NEPRA said that housing societies, industrial estates and others in Karachi have their own distribution system. These companies distribute their own electricity like the electricians of the past.
According to the statement, such areas and institutions will be excluded from the jurisdiction of K Electric. Under the NEPRA Act, there is an option to change the license of K Electric in the public interest.
It is to be noted that the 22-year contract with the electric distribution company of a few months ago will come to an end under which the private company was supplying 123 MW of electricity to K Electric.
The duration of the power outage in Karachi is expected to increase after the termination of the agreement, while sources said that the parties wanted to extend the agreement but the stakeholders opposed it.
Industrial and commercial establishments will also not get electricity from tomorrow due to suspension of power supply from a private company.
NEPRA has directed National Grid and K Electric to provide additional surplus power immediately.
