New Delhi to lock down over weekend as the city grapples with a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases

Jan 4, 2022: The Indian capital, New Delhi, will be locked down over the weekend as authorities deal with a new surge in corona virus cases, partly due to the rapidly spreading Omicron variety.
The country was defeated last year by a devastating quake that swept through hospitals and cemeteries, but since then the number of daily cases has been reasonably low until last week. The new Delhi sanctions came on the same day that the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that he had an infection and was suffering from “mild symptoms”.
Kejriwal said he was isolated at home and had urged those who had been in contact with him in the past few days to get tested. The capital closed its gyms and cinemas last week and imposed an overnight curfew in an effort to stem the tide. All residents will now be asked to stay home from Friday night until Monday morning, except for essential workers.
More than 200,000 people across India died last spring after a wave of delta-variant infections brought the healthcare system to its knees. India’s 481,000 deaths are the third highest in the world after the United States and Brazil.
But fears of under reporting and some studies have suggested that the actual number may be as much as 10 times. India on Monday launched vaccinations for teenagers and will offer booster doses for people over 60 from next week.
