New UN ECOSOC chief Munir Akram calls to promote equitable global economy

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 24 (APP):The new president of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Munir Akram, has called for the implementation of policies to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, achieve the anti-poverty Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change so as to ensure fair global economic growth. “This is critical to create a fair, equitable and resilient global economy,” Akram, Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, said after his unanimous election on Thursday to lead the 54-member ECOSOC, one of the main UN bodies, for a year. He replaced Ambassador Mona Juul of Norway, who headed the Council during 2019-2020. Ambassador Akram has assumed ECOSOC’s presidency as the UN marks its 75th anniversary amid the global economic and health crisis. “The ECOSOC’s central mandate is to promote ‘better standards of life in larger freedoms’ through international economic cooperation,” he told a virtual ceremony. “Never before has the fulfillment of this mandate been more challenging, or more imperative, as it is today.” Ambassador Akram said the pandemic and associated global recession will make it difficult to realize the SDGs.
