Feb 27, 2022: According to a report by AFP, North Korea has accused the U.S of being the “root cause of the Ukraine crisis” while defending Russia, in Pyongyang’s first official response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The root cause of the Ukrainian crisis also lies in the high-handedness and arbitrariness of the US,” said the post uploaded on the North’s foreign ministry website.

“Gone are the days when the US used to reign supreme,” it added.

Russia this week ordered the deployment of troops to neighboring Ukraine, sparking international protests and sanctions imposed by the West, some even directing against Russian President Vladimir Putin himself. But North Korea, in a silent response in the form of a comment posted on the State Department’s website, said the United States was responsible for the catastrophe.

Washington has pursued “military supremacy, ignoring Russia’s legitimate demand for its own security,” according to a commentary by Ri Ji Song, a researcher at the Northern Society for International Politics Study.

The researcher slammed the U.S for holding a “double standard” — saying it meddled in the internal affairs of other countries in the name of “peace and stability” but “but it denounces for no good reason self-defensive measures taken by other countries to ensure their own national security.”

Along with Beijing, Russia is one of the few international friends in the North and has come to the aid of the government before. Moscow has long stood up to growing pressure on nuclear-armed North Korea, even calling for the lifting of international sanctions on humanitarian grounds. China, North Korea’s main ally, has also accused the U.S and its Western allies of “hyping” the Ukraine crisis in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, South Korea, a close security ally of Washington, said last week that it would join international economic sanctions against Russia over its attack on Ukraine.
