The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has revealed in its report on global trends for 2020. In the report, about 82.4 million people have been forcibly displaced due to war, violence, oppression and human rights violations.

According to statistics, this is 4 percent more than last year. This number has been steadily increasing for the last 9 years.

Lockdowns and border closures caused by the coronavirus did not prevent people from leaving their homes, as war and atrocities forced them to flee their homes to save their lives.

Of the estimated 82 million people who have been forcibly displaced, 26.4 million are refugees who have fled their country and taken refuge in other countries. The remaining millions are displaced within their own country due to fighting and violence and seek refuge in safer areas.

United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, says the number of internally displaced people has doubled in the last 10 years, out of which, 42% of them are children. The report notes that two-thirds of those seeking refuge abroad are from Syria, Venezuela, Afghanistan, South Sudan and Myanmar.

Turkey is the country that has provided the largest number of asylum seekers for seven consecutive years, followed by Colombia, Pakistan, Uganda and Germany. High Commissioner Grandi says the current global homelessness crisis is likely to escalate further.

Very few refugees have returned to their home countries in the first six months of 2021. While many new crises are emerging, and in these circumstances the number of displaced people is likely to increase.
