“The great growling engine of change is technology.” Alvin Toffler
In an era defined by innovation, where technologies reshape industries, startup incubators have emerged as a beacon of hope for aspiring entrepreneurs. These vibrant hubs are more than mere facilitators; they are the catalysts that transform a kernel of an idea into full-fledged ventures, which have the potential to shape our collective future.
On the 19th of June, Heriot-Watt University, Dubai hosted a space, titled ‘Edinburgh Business School Global Incubator’ showcasing four brilliant, and innovative start-ups. The event was organised by the Enterprise Executive-Incubator Manager, Huma Imdad. It started off with a short introductory speech by the provost and vice principal of Heriot-Watt, Heather McGregor.
The first start-up was Freight Forwarder led by Kian Karim. As the name suggests, this start-up provides a platform that facilitates efficient and effective collaboration within the freight and logistics industry. It aims to connect companies and professionals in the field, enabling them to streamline their operations, enhance communication, and optimize their freight management processes. Through its platform, Freight Collaboration offers various features and tools that allow businesses to connect with reliable freight forwarding and logistics companies, exchange inquiries, compare rates, and make digital agreements. This venture was also awarded the Logistics Tech Award Prize in 2021.
The second game-changing startup was called Accomi. It was founded by Axam Luwanga but presented by Marina Raju and Mwanja Samuel which aims to redefine student housing. This idea will help international students find a feasible location near their institute, as well as fellow unuiersity mates. Their services include best facilities, easy access, travel and tourism, as well as real time assistance. So you will not only be freed from the hassle of finding yourself a place, but you will also be provided with all the necessities needed to make your life easier! What more could a student ask for?
This was followed by another ground-breaking start-up in the industry of civil engineering. Proscan, partnered with Digitme, and led by Amr Ghyada is quality control made simple. This venture is divided into two teams, the IT and construction team. Their pilot project was tested by Mohammad Bin Rashid Solar Park. Pioneering the field with their cutting-edge software solutions, Proscan revolutionises safety and quality control processes, driving better and safer construction practices. Notably, Proscan’s outstanding contributions have also garnered recognition, as they recently secured the esteemed position of 1st runner-up for the best PropTech Start-up in the UAE, as well as won ‘Best Operational’ Award in the esteemed GRID Heriot-Watt Global Innovation Challenge 2022/2023.
The last trailblazing venture was called Storybox. It focused on making storytelling easier and fun, for children. What this idea does is, scan any drawing of your little one, choose a variable such as kindness, or adventure, and it then creates a story tale revolving around those variables. Moreover, you can listen to it in your father’s voice, and read it in your mother tongue. Simplifying your bedtime responsibilities, and making your children’s childhood fun, while learning cultural values.
In conclusion, innovative incubators fuel startup success by providing growth opportunities and invaluable feedback. They nurture ideas, and connect entrepreneurs with mentors and experts, while offering vital resources.
