OIC voices concern over Islamophobia incidents in India

Feb 15, 2022: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed grave concern over the continuing attacks on Muslims in India and called on the international community, including the United Nations, to take steps to curb hate crimes against the minority community.

The OIC General Secretariat expressed deep concern over the recent public demands for genocide of Muslims by Hindutva supporters in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, and the incidents of harassment of Muslim women on social media sites,  and reported incidents of harassment of Muslim women on social media sites as well as banning of Muslim girl students from wearing the headscarf in Karnataka, read an official statement.

The constant attacks on Muslims and their places of worship, the recent trend of anti-Muslim legislation in various Indian states and the increasing incidence of violence against Muslims by ‘Hindutva’ groups under the pretext of innocence, the rise of Islamophobia indicate a trend. The OIC General Secretariat called on the international community, especially the UN mechanism and the UNHCR, to take the necessary steps in this regard.

The OIC General Secretariat also urged India to ensure the safety, security and well-being of the Muslim community while protecting the lifestyle of its members and ensure punishment against those who incite violence and hate crimes.

Calls across India for anti-Muslim violence – even genocide – are moving from the fringes to the mainstream, while Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his top leaders keep silent.

Earlier, Gregory Stanton, the founder of Genocide Watch, a non-profit group, who raised similar warnings ahead of the massacres in Rwanda in the 1990s, told a US congressional briefing that the demonising and discriminatory “processes” that lead to genocide have been well underway in India.
