ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, the Opposition parties staged a protest in Senate against the government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for ‘brutal’ increase in petrol prices. Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani criticised the incompetence of the PTI government, saying that increasing petroleum products prices will further push up inflation.

Addressing the session, Leader of Opposition, Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani said that the prices of petroleum products have gone beyond the reach of people. He pointed out that increasing petroleum prices is an additional burden over peoples’ shoulders.

The opposition parties do not accept the recent increase in the prices of petroleum products and demand immediate debate on it, he added.

Government reduces price of petroleum products

As a reaction to Gillani’s points, leader of the House Shahzad Waseem said the government has resultantly borne revenue loss of thirty-five billion rupees.

He further stated that petroleum prices have increased by thirty-five percent in the global market over the last two months due to various factors, the major one being Russia-Ukraine situation and that Pakistan needs to deal smartly amid unstabilized economic tensions.

Shahzad Waseem also reassured that as soon as the petroleum prices come down, the benefit will be transferred to the masses.

The Senate was also informed that the government has brought the sales tax on petroleum products to zero and reduced the petroleum  development levy in order to pass on to the people the minimum burden of unprecedented rise in the prices of petroleum products in the global market.
