Opposition submits no-confidence against PM

ISLAMABAD: In a bid to dethrone Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan, Opposition members have jointly submitted a no-confidence motion at National Assembly (NA) Secratariat today on Tuesday March 8, 2022.

The Opposition has also submitted a requisition to summon the National Assembly session in which the no-confidence motion was tabled.

The motion was submitted by an Opposition delegation comprising Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Rana Sanaullah, Ayaz Sadiq, Khwaja Saad Rafique, Mariyam Aurangzeb, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders Shazia Marri, Naveed Qamar and other members.

PML-N Conditionally Agrees to Support No-Confidence Motion

PPP leader Naveed Qamar said that the no-confidence motion, which calls for the requisition of a Natioanl assembly session, had signatures of more than 100 lawmakers. According to NA rules, in order for a session to be requisitioned to vote a no-confodence motion, signatures from at least 68 MNAs are required.

In order to make the no-confidence motion against the PM successful, the joint opposition requires the support of 172 MNAs. After the filing of the motion, the NA speaker has between three to seven days to summon a session of the NA to conduct voting.

Moreover, the 342-member National Assembly must have 172 votes for the no-confidence motion to ensure PM Imran Khan’s removal. The opposition claims they have the numbers needed, with Maulana Fazlur Rehman adding that they have been aiming for the number of 180.
