July 2, 2021: A subcommittee of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Thursday commended Dr. Sania Nishtar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Security, for maintaining financial transparency in the government’s key social security welfare program.
During the PAC sub-committee meeting held at the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) headquarters, Dr. Sania Nishtar briefed the committee members about all the sub-programs run under the Ehsas program.
Dr. Sania Nishtar told the committee that the program is free from any political interference and the decision-making power rests with the board. The committee was informed that the government has made major reforms in the BISP and an annual comparative review of the program has been conducted to ensure improvement.
The purpose of the program is to alleviate poverty and provide financial assistance to the underprivileged sections of the society, Dr. Sania told the committee. These included a pilot program and a national program. Dr. Sania Nishtar said that the government’s safety net has recently approved the inclusion of all transgender people in the country in its financial assistance under the Ehsan Kaifalat program. The Board has also approved an increase in the stipend for secondary and higher secondary education. To encourage the enrollment of girls in secondary and higher secondary education, the Ehsan stipend for girls will be Rs. 4,000 per quarter while they will receive Rs. 3,500 per quarter as compared to boys.
Dr. Sania said the process of Ehsaas survey was also underway across the country with parallel establishments of one-window centres at the district level.
“The purpose of setting up this centre is to provide all facilities to Ehsaas consumers under one roof,” she said.
