Pakistan expresses concern over US-India defense pact

The Government of Pakistan has taken notice of the Basic Exchange and Cooperation Agreement (BECA) between the United States (US) and India.

According to the Foreign Office spokesperson, Pakistan has been constantly highlighting the issue of providing modern military hardware, technology and information to India and India’s increase in nuclear power is a serious threat to peace and stability in South Asia.

The spokesman said that Pakistan has been highlighting the threats to strategic stability in South Asia, including the destabilization of Indian weapons.

According to the spokesperson, India’s extraordinary increase in missile tests is a reflection of dangerous conventional and nuclear build-up, while the massive increase in India’s conventional and nuclear weapons has negatively affected the strategic stability of South Asia.

It may be recalled that India and the United States have signed an agreement on access to satellite data to counter China’s military might.

Significant defense agreements have been signed between the United States and India and this agreement is considered important for India’s supremacy in the region.

Becca is the fourth and final basic defense agreement between the United States and India in this regard. The two countries have previously signed the General Security and Military Information Agreement (2002), the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement (2016), and the Communication Competitiveness and Security Agreement (2018).

Under BECA, India will have access to various aerial and field data aimed at countering China’s military might. Under the agreement, India and the United States will be able to exchange maps, nautical and aeronautical charts, commercial and other non-sensitive images, geophysical, geomagnetic and gravity data.

Under the agreement, the United States will also exchange sensitive satellite and sensor data with India, which will enable India to skillfully target its military targets. In addition, India will be able to monitor the movement of Chinese warships in the Indian Ocean. Access to satellite data will also help India improve the performance of missiles and drones.
