Pakistan participates in multinational drill ‘Bright Star’ in Egypt

Sept 19, 2021: Pakistan Armed Forces, along with 20 other countries, took part in the multinational exercise Bright Star 2021 at Egypt’s Muhammad Naguib military base, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Sunday.

According to ISPR statement, the 20 participating countries included Egypt, the United States, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Cyprus, Iraq, Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco, Kenya, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Greece, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia, Nigeria, Tanzania and France.

“For the first time since 2009, Pakistani troops comprising Army, Navy and Pakistan Air Force troops participated.”

The closing ceremony of the exercise was held at Muhammad Naguib Military Base, ISPR said. Engineer-in-Chief Lt. Gen. Moazzam Ijaz attended the closing ceremony of the exercise.

“The two-week-long exercise focused on the ability to deal with regional hybrid threats, promoting regional stability through joint force interoperability, joint force integration and maritime security operations,” he added.

The statement added that Egyptian Minister of Defense and Commander-in-Chief General Mohamed Zaki and military officials from 20 countries, including USCENTCOM, witnessed the final phase of the joint training, which included live fire of various weapons, including airplanes, helicopters and tanks.

According to ISPR, Lieutenant General Moazzam Ijaz, Engineer Enchef also met with Egyptian Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Mohammed Farid and Air Commander Mohammed Abbas Helmi.

The Bright Star Drill has been held regularly since 1980. The opening ceremony of the tripartite exercise “Brotherhood” hosted by Azerbaijan was held in Baku on September 12, ISPR said.

According to a statement issued by ISPR, the exercise was conducted in the field of counter-terrorism from September 11 to 22, 2021. It added that special forces from Pakistan, Azerbaijan and Turkey were taking part in the exercise.

A day before the exercise, Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said it was the first exercise between the three brotherly countries. The ministry added that the exercise was aimed at improving co-operation between special forces and sharing knowledge and experience.
