Pakistan sends another consignment of relief goods to Afghanistan

Oct 31, 2021: Pakistan sent three more trucks carrying 28 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan on Saturday in an effort to stem the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.

The latest consignment was sent through the Torkham Border Crossing under the auspices of the Pak-Afghan Cooperation Forum (PACF) and the international aid agency Save the Children. Landi Kotal Additional Assistant Commissioner Ashrafuddin handed over relief goods at Torkham Crossing Point to Deputy Commissioner Afghanistan Maulvi Usman.

Earlier this month, Pakistan donated 16 truckloads of relief goods to Afghanistan which were handed over to Afghan Minister for Refugees Haji Khalil Ur Rehman Haqqani and Deputy Minister for IDPs, Pakistan’s Ambassador in Afghanistan Mansoor Ahmad Khan had said on Twitter.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government is pressing for the release of billions of dollars of central bank reserves as the drought-stricken nation faces a cash crunch, mass starvation and a new migration crisis.

Afghanistan has billions of dollars in overseas assets with the US Federal Reserve and other European central banks, but the money has been frozen since the Taliban ousted the Western-backed government in August. A finance ministry spokesman said on Friday that the government would respect human rights, including women’s education, because it had asked for fresh funds on humanitarian aid.

“The money belongs to the Afghan people. Just give us your money,” ministry spokesman Ahmad Wali Haqmal told Reuters News Agency.

“Freezing this money is immoral and against all international laws and values.”
