Pakistan summons Indian diplomat after Hindutva calls for Muslim genocide
Dec 28, 2021: According to a report by the Express Tribune, Pakistan on Monday summoned the Indian charge d’affaires at the Foreign Office and expressed grave concern over an open call by Hindutva supporters for genocide of Indian Muslims.
The Foreign Office said in a statement that the violent hate speeches were made during the “Dharma Sansad” held in Haridwar, Uttarakhand on December 17-20, 2021.
The FO statement said, “It was impressed upon the government of India that it was highly reprehensible that the Hindu Raksha Sena’s Prabodhanand Giri and other Hindutva figures who called for ethnic cleansing have neither expressed any regret nor the Indian government has condemned or taken any action against them so far,”
The Indian side was told that the alleged hate speech was viewed with deep concern by civil society and the people of Pakistan and around the world. “Unfortunately, toxic rhetoric against minorities, especially Muslims, and their persecution of non-state patronage has become commonplace in India under the present Hindutva-led BJP-RSS coalition government. “
The Indian side was reminded that such incitement to violence by Hindutva personalities, including elected members of the ruling party, took place before the anti-Muslim riots in New Delhi in February 2020.
“The continued grave violations of human rights of minorities, especially Muslims and their places of worship, anti-Muslim legislations by the Union Government of India and several BJP-ruled states, and continued incidents of violence against Muslims on flimsy pretexts by Hindutva groups with complete impunity and often under state patronage highlight the worsening trend of Islamophobia and present a grim picture about the fate of Muslims in India.”
“India is expected to investigate these hate speeches and incidents of widespread violence against minorities, particularly Muslims and their houses of worship and take measures to stop such incidents from recurring in future,” the statement said.
Islamabad also urged New Delhi to ensure the safety, security and welfare of its minorities, including the protection of their religious sites and way of life. Despite public demands by Hindu extremists to exterminate Indian Muslims, neither the Indian government nor the ruling BJP has condemned the provocative remarks. Human rights activists have expressed concern over the Modi government’s silence, saying it amounts to endorsing the call of Hindu extremists against Muslims.
Some observers have linked anti-Muslim hate speech to the upcoming UP state elections, where the sectarian card plays a key role.
