June 28, 2021: According to foreign media, Pakistan’s foreign minister had said on Sunday that violence and lawlessness could reign in Afghanistan after the US withdrawal, and that Pakistan would close its border to the country if the Taliban took control.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that Pakistan has taken 3.5 million Afghan refugees in the last few years, but would not accept any more. He was addressing a weekly media briefing in the central city of Multan.

“We can’t sustain any more damage, we have to close our borders, we have to protect our national interest,” he said, adding that Pakistan would continue its diplomatic efforts for peace in the country, and its democratic Will welcome the elected leadership.

After the Soviet withdrawal in 1989, millions of Afghans fled to Pakistan due to fighting between Mujahideen groups.
