Maria Riaz, a Pakistani illustrator and author, has recently launched a book to commemorate the achievements and contributions made by Pakistan’s greatest philanthropist, Mr. Abdul Sattar Edhi (late)

Since Partition in 1947, Pakistan has rarely commemorated its “heroes” without reason. We either do it if its a national holiday, birth or death anniversary or some other special occasion. “Edhi Baba” is Riaz’s initiative of honoring the efforts of our very own hero for his empathy to those who needed it the most.

In her tribute to the great social activist and philanthropist, Riaz has likened him to a super hero like the world renowned super heroes including: Batman, Superman, Spider Man, Iron Man, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and others et cetera.

What is it that makes a super hero? All marvel heroes possess a power that makes them different, makes them “super”, so what is his super power? Maria Riaz has illustrated Edhi’s super power to be his kind-heartedness, his empathy, his compassion. In her own words, his super power is his “bigheartedness”.

Twitter has gone crazy over it. What’s remarkable about the book is that although the colorful illustrations are meant to attract a younger audience, primarily children, it can cater to any generation because while its message is simple, it is a reminder much needed in our everyday lives. The message of kindness and compassion.

Maria Riaz believes, “By helping people, one will become generous and turn into a superhero.” This is why our “national hero” the remarkable Mr. Abdul Sattar Edhi needs to be remembered, so our generations can grow as conscientious human beings.

Another most valuable lesson put forth by Riaz is that of charity. She discussed that her aim for writing the book was partly due to her wish that we should contribute to the Edhi foundation to help them provide safety, shelter and relief to those who need them the most.

Ever since Edhi passed away, the Foundation he started has been doing poorly due to constraint of funds. The author, Maria Riaz has agreed to give half of her profits earned by the book to Edhi Foundation in memory of its founder.

Here are some tweets by Pakistani”s who are absolutely thrilled with the launch of this much needed book.
