Pakistan has expressed regret over not being allowed to participate in the India-led UN Security Council (UNSC) debate on Afghanistan, despite being the war-torn country’s closest neighbor.

According to reports, the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement Pakistan’s international community’s role in the peace process as neighbor of Afghanistan was really positive but also said how the UNSC platform was being used to propagate a false narrative, without letting Pakistan express its own perspective.

“The council’s platform was provided to promote false statements against Pakistan,” it was said.

The meeting was convened at the request of the Afghan government when the Taliban launched attacks on major urban centers and Defense Minister Bismillah Mohammadi’s residence in Kabul. However, no way forward has been decided so far.

The FO said the Afghan envoy spread false information and made baseless allegations against Pakistan to mislead the international community. Pakistan has categorically denied the allegations, with the FO emphasizing its efforts for the peace process.

“We emphasize that there is no military solution to the Afghan conflict and that a political solution is the only way to achieve lasting peace and security in the country,” the statement said.

The FO also discussed the signing of a peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban, and later Pakistan’s role in initiating intra-Afghan talks.

In this regard, the FO said that they were serious about the escalating violence in Afghanistan and the lack of significant progress in the inter-Afghan dialogue.

The FO once again called on all warring parties in Afghanistan to abandon the military approach, engage in constructive dialogue and ensure a comprehensive, broad-based, and comprehensive political settlement.

The statement also pointed to the role of the people in sabotaging peace efforts.

“We reiterate our call on the Government of Afghanistan to refrain from blaming and engage in meaningful dialogue with Pakistan to address the challenges of peace, security and development in the region,” the FO said. “In this regard, we reiterate the need for effective use of bilateral institutional arrangements such as the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity.”
