Palestine condemns Israel's refusal to cooperate with UN commission #Baaghi

Ramallah (Palestine): Palestinian authorities have condemned Israel’s refusal to cooperate with the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (UNHRC) commission over an inquiry into the tensions in the Gaza Strip since May of last year.

According to reports, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement condemning the Israeli government’s decision to deny entry to officials from the UNHRC, into Israel and Palestinian territories.

On Thursday, Israel has announced that it will not cooperate with the United Nations (UN) and the international community in investigating the alleged abuse of Palestinians. According to reports, Israel officially informed the UNHRC that it will not cooperate and will deny entry to its members.

Israel’s envoy to the UN, Ambassador Meriav Eilon Shahar said, “It is clear to my country that there is no reason to believe that Israel will be treated fairly, and without discrimination by the Human Rights Council or its Commission of Inquiry.”

It is pertinent to note that the UNHRC set up a three-member commission of inquiry in May 2021, eleven days after the war between Hamas militants and Israel in the Gaza Strip. Since then, several international organizations, including Human Rights Watch (HRW), have labeled Israeli attacks as war crimes. Both UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet and HRW have also said that indiscriminate rocket fire by Hamas on Israeli cities also violates international rules of war. Meanwhile, Israel has blamed Hamas for killing civilians, saying the group used residential areas for shelter during military operations and fired several rockets at Israel from densely populated areas.

Israel has repeatedly rejected international demands for an investigation into its conduct during the war and its mistreatment of Palestinians. According to reports, Israel says it is hostile and part of an international campaign to declare it an “illegal state.”

In the statement released by the Palestinian authorities, Israel’s “decision is illegal”. Palestinian Ministry of Foreign affairs added that it is necessary to support the work done by the UNHRC which is “consistent with the mandate granted by the UN” and international law.

It is pertinent to note that in May 2021, Egypt brokered a ceasefire that ended the 11 days of clashes between Israel and the Hamas-led Islamic Resistance Movement in the Gaza Strip, during which around 260 Palestinians and 14 Israelis were killed.
