Parliament will decide names of ECP members

Islamabad, Oct 14: The Islamabad High Court sent the ECP members’ appointment case to the speakers of National Assembly and Senate.
Chief Justice Athar Minallah said during the hearing of case that this is a matter of public and national interest. “Do you want ECP to stop functioning?”
An additional attorney general told the Islamabad high court that petitions regarding this case have been filed in Supreme Court and high courts of Sindh and Lahore.
The Chief Justice asked from Attorney general if the parliament can’t even solve minor problems anymore?
On 22 August , the government of Pakistan issued a notification, accordingy to that notification Khalid Mehmood Siddiqui and Munir Ahmed Khan Kakar has been appointed as members from Sindh and Balochistan respectively. The two posts have been lying free since 26 January, after the retirement of 2 members from Sindh and Balochistan Abdul Ghaffar Soomro and Justice (retd) Shakeel Baloch. The law asked the posts should be filled in 45 days.

After seven month of deadlocke President Mr Arif Alvi had appointed two members from Sindh and Balochistan to ECP to fill vacant posts. However, the electoral body of election commission did not organise oaths to them, claiming that their appointments were unconstitutional and unlawful. The opposition parties had also m criticised the step taken by the president Arif Alvi.Since then, a deadlock has been continuing between the government and the opposition over the matter.
