Passenger breaks into American Airlines cockpit at Honduras

A passenger broke into the cockpit of an American Airlines plane at an airport in Honduras and damaged the plane as he was boarding a flight to Miami before being detained, the airline said Tuesday.

According to the details, a man was arrested in Honduras after entering the cockpit of an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 during the boarding process. Local police arrested the unidentified male passenger after he broke into the cockpit, damaged some cockpit controls and attempted to jump out a cockpit window before crew members intervened.

The six-year old American Airlines Boeing 737-800 was set to operate flight AA488 from Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, to Miami, Florida. The flight was boarding its 121 passengers when the incident occurred causing a delay of seven hours.

The airline sent a replacement aircraft to pick up passengers rather than cancelling the flight. However, it is still unclear what the man wanted to achieve or what might have motivated him.
