Passenger plane struck by bird before landing at Islamabad airport

Dec 3, 2021: A passenger of a private airline at Islamabad Airport narrowly escaped an accident when it collided with a bird during landing.

The plane was carrying more than 150 passengers from Karachi. After a short delay, as the engineers of the private airline had to carry out repair work, the plane had to return to Karachi.

A spokesman for the private airline said the bird hit the landing gear. The spokesman said the plane suffered minor damage as a result of the bird strike, adding that the Islamabad-Karachi flight would now be delayed.

Earlier this year, a foreign airline’s passenger plane Tuesday narrowly escaped an accident after it was hit by a bird near the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore.

With around 350 passengers on board, the Istanbul-bound plane was hit by a bird as soon as it took off from the airport. The pilot, however, managed to turn the plane around and landed it safely at the airport.

In a recent countrywide report compiled by the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on bird-strike incidents experienced by flights, it said there have been 60 such cases in just nine months.

According to the report, Lahore scored highest in such accidents with 21 cases compared with Islamabad and Karachi that trail it with only 13 and eight cases respectively. A total of 21 flights around Lahore airport have been struck by birds in this 9-month period, the PIA report said.

On the other hand, Peshawar came fourth with six incidents in this period and Sukkur airport conceded four strikes, the report said.

It also included Quetta and Multan for each experiencing one incident.
