Peshawar terrorist attack: UN expresses grief over loss of life
NEW YORK: The United Nations has expressed sorrow over the loss of life in the attack on a mosque in Peshawar. According to details, UN Secretary-General António Guterres telephoned Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Munir Akram to express his deep sorrow and regret over the terrorist attack in Peshawar and the loss of innocent lives.
Condemning the incident, the Secretary-General said that it is a personal shock to him as he knows Peshawar well and is aware of the hospitable and good nature of its residents. António Guterres offered condolences to the government, leadership and people of Pakistan over the Peshawar incident.
Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, thanked the Secretary-General for his condolences and solidarity with Pakistan.

Earlier, Afghanistan’s Deputy Information Minister Zabihullah Mujahid tweeted his strong condemnation of the Peshawar bombing. Zabihullah Mujahid said that there was no justification for attacking citizens and worshipers and strongly condemned the Peshawar blast. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
It is pertinent to note that approximately fifty-six people, including Imam Irshad Khalili, were martyred in the suicide blast during Friday prayers, in the Jama Mosque of Kocha Risaldar in Qissa Khawani Bazar area of Peshawar.
According to reports, during Friday prayers at Qissa Khawani Bazaar in Peshawar, two assailants approached the gate of the Jamia Masjid and opened fire on policemen. As a result, 2 policemen were martyred on the spot. The assailants then entered the mosque, after which an explosion took place.

According to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) Peshawar spokesman, 56 people were killed and 194 injured in the Kocha Risaldar blast. The condition of some of the injured is critical. Timely medical facilities were provided to the critically injured. A large number of doctors and nurses provided treatment.
Significant evidence was gathered from the scene, according to police officials. The blast is being investigated. While an emergency was declared in three major government hospitals in Peshawar, security was also on high alert. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesman Barrister Muhammad Saif confirmed that the blast inside the mosque was a suicide bombing involving two assailants.
