Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has made alcohol dope testing mandatory for cabin crew before allowing them to undertake flight operations.

According to the details, the national carrier has made it mandatory for its cabin crew to undergo a ‘Breathalyzer’ test in order to determine the level of alcohol in blood before boarding the aircraft.

The notification states that the purpose of the test is to prevent the use of alcohol and drugs in the crew.

‘The test will be carried out at briefing rooms by flight surgeon/medical officer or ground staff supervised by flight surgeon,’ states the notification.

According to the PIA administration, the move was made by PIA in the context of international flight safety regulations and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) rules.

Earlier, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) was testing pilots and cockpit staff, however, now, PIA will make it mandatory to test its cabin crew before all flights.
