Plane crashes into building in Milan, 8 people killed

Oct 4, 2021: A small private jet has crashed into an empty building on the outskirts of Milan in northern Italy, killing all eight people on board, according to local police.

The plane, which took off from Milan’s Linate city airport on Sunday, was headed for the island of Sardinia, officials said.

Romanian billionaire Dan Petrescu was piloting the plane when is crashed in to the building. The 68-year-old was one of Romania’s richest men. He headed a major construction firm and owned a string of hypermarkets and malls. He also held German nationality, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported.

Corriere and the AGI news agency said Petrescu’s 65-year-old wife, who also had French nationality, and their son Dan Stefano, 30, were killed, as well as a child.

The crash happened just outside a suburban metro station in Milan, on the outskirts of San Donato. Locals heard the blast as the plane crashed into a two-story building that was empty at the time as it was being renovated.

Witnesses said flames and smoke engulfed several vehicles parked in the streets, but no one was killed.

The Italian news agency ANSA quoted the National Air Safety Agency as saying that the plane was a PC-12, single engine, executive type aircraft.

A Milan fire official, Carlo Cardinali, said that the aircraft had crashed into the building’s facade with a devastating impact.

Meanwhile the plane’s black box has been recovered, according to Italian media.
