PM directs to begin construction work of Diamer-Basha Dam

Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the concerned authorities to begin construction work of the Diamer-Basha Dam.

PM Imran was chairing a briefing on national water security strategy and construction of dams to meet agricultural as well as energy requirements of the country.

The premier was informed that all the preparation work for the Diamer-Bhasha Dam has been completed and the project was ready for construction.

During the meeting, PM Imran was apprised regarding the progress of all pending issues related to the dam’s construction. The premier expressed satisfaction over the progress made so far.

The country could generate 4,500 megawatts electricity from the dam and overcome the shortage of water.

After the dam is built, 1.23 million acres of land could be used for agricultural purposes. The government will spend Rs 78.5 billion on social development in the areas around the Diamer Bhasha dam. Moreover, the dam will also reduce the government’s spending worth billions to counter the disasters of floods every year.

PM Imran was also informed about the Dasu hydropower project and the progress made so far. “The premier expressed satisfaction over the progress and directed to ensure expeditious commencement of the project,” the statement read.

It added that the prime minister was also told that funds have been arranged for Naulong dam in Balochistan and that work on the project will commence next year.
