PM Imran Khan wants a televised debate with Narendra Modi to resolve mutual differences

Jan 12, 2022: According to a report by Geo TV, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said that the 10-year-old dispute between the Thor and Harban tribes has been settled.

Taking to his official Twitter account, the Prime Minister said the move would pave the way for the development of Diamer-Bhasha Dam, adding that the settlement would allow the dam to be completed “easily”.

“Historic [development and] good news on Diamer-Bhasha Dam. The grand jirga of Diamer and Upper Kohistan elders has settled the decades-old Thor and Harbin dispute,” he wrote. “This will allow the smooth [and] timely completion of the dam and at the same time pave the way for resolving the border dispute between GB and KP.”

The long standing conflict claimed seven lives in 2014. Later, a jirga was formed in December 2020 to resolve the territorial dispute between Harban area of Kohistan (KP) and Thor area of Diamer (GB).

The announcement was made by the Thor Harban Grand Jirga, which was mandated to resolve the dispute, at a function held at the Diamer Bhasha Dam project site on Tuesday. The grand jirga consisted of 13 members from Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan and Upper Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including elders and religious scholars.

It is worth noting here that Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is planning Diamer Bhasha Dam on Indus River which is to be completed in 2028-29.
