PM Khan Gives Practical Demonstration of Electronic Voting Machines

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan recently gave a practical demonstration of how the new electronic voting machines work, after being briefed about them by Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz.

According to reports, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz first gave a briefing on how the machine works to the Prime Minister, after which he reviewed it and gave a practical demonstration of how votes will be cast.

During the briefing, the Federal Minister for Science and Technology said that the machine used a high-standard software and as such, does not require the internet.

Earlier, on social networking site Twitter, Prime Minister Imran Khan spoke about the usefulness of electronic voting machine in ensuring impartiality of the election process, effectively addressing concerns raised by various parties in the past. He emphasized that the electronic voting machine was of key importance in not only restoring public confidence but also in ensuring transparency in the entire system.

He also congratulated the Ministry of Science and Technology on this progressive development.

It may be recalled that EVM machines have been developed by the three institutions under the Ministry of Science, namely National University for Science and Technology (NUST), COMSATS, and National Institute of Engineering (NIE) and they used local technology which cost only half as much as imported machines.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has repeatedly stressed the use of these machines and stated that technology is the only way to maintain credibility of elections.

During an event in June, he invited the opposition to sit down and choose from the available EVM models.

The Prime Minister said that for a year now they had been asking the opposition to cooperate with them and help reform the system.

It may be recalled that in May, President Dr. Arif Alvi approved a Presidential Ordinance under which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) would be bound to purchase the EVMs and go abroad in the next elections, which would allow oversees Pakistanis to also vote.

Yesterday, Shibli Faraz said that he would soon brief the opposition and MPs on the newly developed system, adding that he hoped that most of their concerns would be allayed after his briefing.

He said his ministry would soon arrange a media briefing and ECP officials where the machine would be demonstrated.
