Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) Hanif Abbasi has resigned from his post. The PMLN leader has sent his resignation to the PM Shehbaz.
He thanked the Prime Minister for providing him the opportunity and requested the premier to accept his resignation.
Abbasi maintained that he can serve the public without holding any public office.
Pertinent to note that last month, IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah heard former interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed’s petition who challenged Abbasi appointment arguing “a person with a criminal conviction, particularly a conviction for dealing in narcotics,” is unsuitable to hold such a position.
Then the IHC issued the directives barring the Abbasi from performing any further duties.
In a latest development, Abbasi has now tendered his resignation from the portfolio of SAPM.
The PMLN leader Muhammad Hanif Abbasi had been a member of the National Assembly twice from 2002 to 2013.
Abbasi was arrested in April 2018 in ephedrine quota case by anti-narcotics force and sentenced to prison for life by the Rawalpindi court.
However, the Lahore High Court suspended the sentence on April 11, 2019 and maintained that all other accused in the case were acquitted and all legal points were not considered during the case.
