Podcaster, husband killed by stalker in Washington

WASHINGTON: Seattle-based podcaster Zohreh Sadeghi, 33, and her husband, a former engineer for Google, were killed by a stalker.

The couple was found dead along with the killer, identified as Texas trucker Ramin Khodakaramrezaei who died by suicide afterward. According to reports, the driver allegedly broke into Sadeghi’s, 33, house and killed her as well as her husband, Mohammed Naseri, 35 in what is being described as a case of stalking.

Authorities at the scene have identified the victims as the podcaster and her husband, as well as the suspect, thirty-eight-year-old trucker, Ramin Khodakaramrezaei. Police said they found the three bodies after officers turned up at the scene to investigate a call reporting shots in the Redmond area, Washington nearly fifteen miles away from Seattle.

According to reports, Sadeghi’s mother had been at her daughter’s house when the intruder came but managed to escape to a neighbour’s home from where she contacted the police. In a statement, the Redmond police said that first responders pulled Naseri out of the house and attempted CPR to resuscitate him but failed. After which, they declared Sadeghi and Khodakaramrezaei dead.

Redmond’s Chief of Police, Darrell Lowe, in an interview with the Daily Beast said that the suspect first became known to the victim after he listened to a podcast she did on the concept of “gaining employment in the tech industry”. According to the police statement, “things escalated” after Sadeghi obtained a court order against Khodakaramrezaei, prohibiting him from contacting her.

It is believed the podcaster may have been concerned about her safety given the nature of Khodakaramrezaei’s messages, especially their content, and frequency. According to Lowe, at one point the suspect called her 100 times in a day. After which he attempted “physical stalking” according to the Daily Beast, even following her to a conference in Denver, Colorado back in 2022.

Since the incident, the police have confirmed that they were “familiar with the victim and residence because of the ongoing stalking investigation”. Additionally, Chief Lowe stated despite the no-contact order from the court, Sadeghi was not provided any material protection, as the couple was killed before it could be served to Khodakaramrezaei.

Speaking with Daily Beast, Lowe explained that a protection order is “simply a piece of paper” it cannot ensure the person guaranteed protection against harm.

The Chief expressed regret saying, “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family and the Redmond community following this horrific tragedy. This is an incredibly sad situation and the worst possible outcome of a stalking case.” Lowe added that his team will continue to investigate the case and what led to the tragic loss.
