TANK: Two police officials embraced martyrdom in district Tank of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday whilst they were protecting a polio vaccination team.
The two police personnel were martyred when armed gunmen opened fire indiscriminately upon a polio team whilst they were busy inoculating children in Tank’s Kot Azam area.
According to details, the martyred constables were named Pir Rehman and Nisar, both of whose bodies have now been shifted to the hospital.
Right after the attack, a heavy contingent of police and other security agencies arrived in the area. The investigation has commenced and the police has collected evidence from the crime scene and statements from eyewitnesses which were present at the time.
The national anti-polio campaign had commenced earlier on Monday in Sindh’s urban centers of Karachi and Hyderabad. In addition, the anti-polio drive had also began in six districts of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, namely being district Bannu, district Lakki Marwat, North and South Waziristan, district Dera Ismail Khan and district Tank.
The ongoing national anti-polio campaign will last until August 24. Meanwhile, the drive will be initiated in Balochistan on August 29 and is expected to last until September 4.
According to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) lawmaker and Federal Minister of Health Abdul Qadir Patel, the vaccination drive will commence in other parts of the country between August 22-26.
As of this year, there have been 14 cases of polio reported in Pakistan so far.
