Lahore, 25th November: Senior PPP leader Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar, passed away at his Lahore residence on Wednesday.

Baaghi TV: According to reports, PPP leader and former defence minister who passed away today in Lahore was 74-years-old.

Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, who was suffering from Alzheimer disease was admitted to the Shalimar Hospital, a health facility he and his family helped to develop.

His funeral prayers were offered after Zuhr Nawaz at the T-Block mosque in Lahore’s Defence Housing Authority on Wednesday.

Former President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow over the demise of Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar and paid tribute for his services to the party. Asif Zardari said that the PPP leadership and workers were saddened by the demise of Ahmed Mukhtar. Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar was a brave, courageous and loyal companion.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari expressed sorrow over the demise of former Federal Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar and said that he was a steadfast and experienced leader and the capital of the party.

As a resident director of Service Group of Industries in Gujarat since 1987, he continued to support his elder brother Chaudhry Ahmed Saeed in service group politics, but for the first time in 1990, he contested the general election from Gujarat against Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on a PPP ticket.

A businessman by profession, Mukhtar entered politics in 1990 as a member of the PPP. He was elected to the National Assembly in 1993 and was appointed Minister for Commerce till 1996 during the tenure of Benazir Bhutto. In 2008 he was appointed Minister for Defence.

He leaves behind a wife, two sons and a daughter.
