Prime Minister Imran Khan’s PTI triumphs in AJK polls
July 26, 2021: According to preliminary results, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party won a majority of seats in the Pakistan-administered Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections.
According to unofficial results released by the Election Commission, Khan’s PTI won 25 of the 45 seats in Sunday’s election. The opposition Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 10 seats, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won six seats.
Polling took place across the Himalayan region, which had a population of 4.04 million, and in some districts of Pakistan where a large population of Kashmiri migrants live. Violence erupted in at least one constituency on Sunday after a fierce contest between Pakistan’s main political parties following Sunday’s vote.
At least two people were killed and several others injured in a clash between PTI and PPP supporters in the town of Kotli, 100km (62 miles) south of the region’s capital Muzaffarabad. Violence temporarily disrupted polling in this and several other constituencies. Also on Sunday, four Pakistani soldiers were killed and four others were injured in an accident in the Laswa area of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, the Pakistani military said in a statement. Troops were deployed to provide security during the polls.
In a statement, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry has said that India is “very upset” over “victory” of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Prime Minister Imran Khan, in (AJK) elections.
The minister while speaking to media in Punjab’s Pind Dadan Khan on Sunday said Kashmiris have overwhelmingly voted in favour of PTI candidates and “with the grace of Allah it will form the government” in the region.
Fawad said that Indian media had campaigned against PTI during AJK electioneering, adding that formation of PTI government in the region would come as a great shock to India.
He also thanked the people for voting for the PTI candidate in the constituency and added that Pind Dadan Khan is a stronghold of the ruling party.
Congratulating the people, the Minister said that the free and fair election process inside Pakistani administered Kashmir has given hope to the people of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) that the time is not far when they will cast their votes in transparent elections.
Fawad Chaudhry said the election process in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir was largely peaceful. Expressing sorrow over the death of two PTI workers during the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections, the minister said that PPP workers attacked party workers in several places.
Chaudhry said that more than 50% turnout is a positive development.
