A ban on hijab at schools has raised protests in India. Several have gathered in the Southern Karnataka state to protest against the unfair restriction. The restriction was imposed at a government school and spread to several other since then.

After a government school in India banned headscarves for female Muslim students, several other schools followed the footsteps which erupted a series of protests in India. Social media showed hundreds of people gathered on streets and waving Indian flags in at least two towns in Karnataka state on Monday.

The recent take of government schools towards Muslim women has raised a lot of questions regarding the protection of minorities in India. Many Muslims have condemned the ban, seeing it as way to persecute Muslims by targeting their religious rights.

“It is discriminatory in nature and also, it is against the rights that are provided under the constitution of India,” Sumayya Roushan, president of the Girls Islamic Organization Karnataka, said at a Monday press conference.

She also added that the ban violated “a personal choice that the students are entitled to, which does not harm any other person.”

It has also been reported that one of the schools did yield to the protests partially by letting the students enter into school but kept them seated in a separate classroom. Moreover, two other schools that restricted hijab declared a holiday and were closed on Monday.

The nationalist government of India under Modi’s rule has backed up the ban being the extremists as they always have been. Prime Minister Modi’s right wing Bharatiya Janata Party which governs the Karnataka state supported the ban while the oppositional part of Congress condemned it.

“By letting students’ hijab come in their way of education, we are robbing the future of the daughters of India,” said Rahul Gandhi of the opposition Congress party.
