Lionel Messi has been suspended by the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) after going on an allegedly “unauthorized” trip to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) without permission from the club.

According to Geo News, the PSG not only suspended Messi for two weeks but also imposed a fine on the athlete for traveling to Saudi Arabia without permission from their administration. This means the Argentinian player will not be able to participate in the upcoming training and matches against Troyes and Ajaccio.

On the other hand, there are reports the footballer requested permission to travel for “commercial” work but was denied after which he still went to the Middle Eastern country. In response to his “unauthorized” actions, the player has been suspended for the next two weeks as part of PSG’s disciplinary action.

The move has also raised questions about his future with PSG. It is worth mentioning that Messi’s contract with the Paris-Saint Germain club is set to expire this summer and the suspension is an indication that PSG may be looking to build a new team with younger players. It also indicates the club may be moving towards a “zero-tolerance approach to discipline” reported Geo News.

The suspension comes after Messi played a 90 minutes game in PSG’s home defeat to Lorient on Sunday. PSG is focused on clinching their ninth league title in eleven seasons and is currently at a five-point clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table with five games remaining. Nonetheless, the suspension has significantly raised concerns about Messi’s future with many suggesting he may be returning to Barcelona, who are interested in getting him back.

According to reports, Barcelona is currently in talks with LaLiga, and aims to generate better “flexibility” in their Financial Fair Play ratio. On the other hand, they have also expressed interest in having Messi return for what will most likely be his last year in European football. Apart from a prospective position with Barcelona, Messi has been offered a one-year deal by Al Hilal worth £400m to play for Saudi Arabia.

So far, there is no clarity about whether he will be accepting the offer, despite already serving as a tourism ambassador for Saudi Arabia.

According to Al Jazeera, the footballer is facing disciplinary action and the suspension comes at a “delicate time” as the French club hopes to extend his contract. On the other hand, French media including L’Equipe and RMC Sport have also confirmed reports of the suspension on Wednesday.

Al Jazeera‘s report further confirmed that the World Cup champion will not be paid during the suspension period. It is worth mentioning that Messi led Argentina to the World Cup victory in December while holding the score of 15 league goals and 15 assists in the French league. However, Messi has not publicly reacted to the suspension on his social media accounts.
